Check the amount of storage you are using
If you are using an iOS, then just go to settings and tap the top (Apple ID) section in settings. Afterward, tap iCloud. Now, you should be able to see a chart with details that show how you are using the iCloud storage. Simply tap on “Manage Storage” to reach the page that lists every item that is stored on the iCloud. The data stored for each app or service can be deleted, but do not delete it before you have backed up the data you need elsewhere.
If you are using macOS, then: Access system preferences > iCloud. Afterwards, choose “Manage” option that is located at the bottom right of the window.
However, in both the cases you will see how much storage you’re using and what items are using it.
Managing iCloud Backup
If you stay at the 5GB storage limit, then you will be facing problems soon enough. In order to reduce the amount of iCloud storage that has been used up, you can just back up the necessary data that you need, but not very often, and then delete the existing backups from the iCloud. You can use iTunes instead of iCloud and backup the data on a Mac or a PC. Connect the device to the computer and launch iTunes and click on the device icon to the left of the iTunes window beside the category menu.
After it is done, select Summary and choose This Computer where you see automatically backup. You will need to create a password for it.
Now, when your iOS device will be connected to the connected to future, it will automatically be backed up to the computer. This way, you don’t have to worry about the low storage on the iCloud.
Using iCloud storage efficiently
The Macs that have been released recently can be used to automatically sync and store the content of both desktop and download folder. These items can be accessed from any other Apple device, once these items are available there.
Surely, it is a useful feature, but if you want to limit the iCloud data, you can disable this on the Mac is System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive. Now, simply click the options button and untick the desktop & documents folder. Now, in the future, these items will not be stored on the iCloud, although the existing items will remain there. You must manually save these items to the Mac to remove the older desktop and download items.
- Open the iCloud drive and find the documents or downloads folder.
- Now, open a new finder window, then Go > Home.
- Simply drag and drop items from the iCloud drive to the home directory. These items will be saved on your Mac after downloading.
- Once done, then you can delete the items from the iCloud drive.
